To me Photo-visual literacy is an art of observation. Its about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I've found it has little to do with things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.

What is Visual Literacy?

"Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image. Visual literacy is based on the idea that pictures can be “read” and that meaning can be communicated through a process of reading."

Visual Literacy has various definitions and uses. The earlier concept of visual literacy was mainly reading prehistoric signs and symbols. Now, visual literacy is applied on modern mass media (like advertisements and other mass-circulation material) and internet media (like blogs, podcasts, video sharing). A Visual is considered one of the most important and widely used tools in learning; it is not just used in early learning stage but even in more complex ways. And like written and spoken words, a visual is also one way of communicating messages to people; message relayed through it is as effective as other forms of communication.

  1. I like the definition Goldz made. The era of visual culture has come. The current domination of the world is the visual concept. Sounds and scenes, especially the scenes, organized the aesthetics and gradually command the audience. In a mass society, it is almost inevitable.

With the progress of the time, the demand of mass community is gradually extended. Brands, as an intangible asset, have becoming a commodity as well as the identification to distinguish the importance and credibility, making people's sight of visual identification system appear as a whole. The Era of visual culture accelerated economic development rapidly. Economic development also contributed to the visual culture of progress. In short, design and economic development of the times is closely related and inseparable.

  2. To me as a photographer i have been using this Virtual literacy over the years of my experience even when i was a little kid. Photography and Visual literacy are somewhat related to each other good composition allows the photographer to convey messages and emotions through images like placing objects in appropriate positions, choosing the best point of view. Balance is correct combination of colors, shapes, and areas of light and dark that complement one another. Think about your subject and capture it form an angle viewpoint or time of the day that focuses attention on the subject. Everyday this is very essential to our lives knowing that we decipher what we see from time to time.

  3. It is interesting how far visual literacy has come in the past decades. Who would of thought that their would be complete dictionary definations, discussions, and books about such topics. It is exciting to see where technology is taking us. When I look at photo collections of artist`s such as Christian`s; I can`t beleive what photographers are capable of now-a-days. To see the innovative and creative ways they display emotions and feeling with a single click of a button is truly amazing. These photo`s may educate people, document special time`s in their life, or simply bring color to a room. Either way, they are essential to our generation`s interaction, communication and learning techniques.
